Burnt Out By Social Media? Read This

Let’s not beat around the bush here. Social media flicks its flame into every part of our lives.

 Social media is a great tool for entrepreneurs and small business owners, but your activity could lead to burnout. Avoid burning out from social media by following these tips.
  • Scrolling through your Instagram feed whenever a webpage doesn’t load immediately.
  • Getting sucked into a Facebook Group conversation that takes up half your day.
  • Watching a bunch of Instagram Stories as you sip your morning coffee.
  • Double tapping this.
  • Double tapping that.
  • Posting your own content and then checking in every twenty minutes to see how it’s doing.

I know, I know. I do it too sometimes.

And I’m certainly not the first to say we’re no longer consuming content on social media - it’s consuming us.

The “problem” of social media is not new news.

In fact, I don’t believe social media is a “problem” at all.

The problem here is, as ambitious entrepreneurs, our activity on social media can lead us to burnout faster than ever before.

Oh dang, she just said the B word.

Yes, burnout. Social media fuels our journey to burnout in sneaky little ways, accumulating over time, guiding us right into the trap of waking up one morning and being totally convinced we can’t possibly do one more thing in our business without bursting into flames.

But we can avoid this. That’s the good news.

We can avoid burnout fueled by social media, first by understanding how it manages to wipe us out, and second by changing our perspective on social media as a whole.

Here’s how social media fuels our journey to burnout:

  1. Our emotions are hijacked every few minutes by whatever we happen to see on social media as we scroll.
  2. As ambitious entrepreneurs, we then spend our already-limited time and energy creating content for social media that will *hopefully* get us more followers and engage our current audiences.

Hijacked emotions + Striving to create the perfect posts = Stress

Enough stress over time = Burnout

 Avoid social media burnout by following these tips.

Ahh and there it is.

So as I mentioned earlier, we can avoid all of this.

Not by just swearing off social media. That’s just not going to happen for more than a day or two at most.

Instead, I propose shifting our perspective about social media to make it a more intentional, fulfilling place to be.

Here’s how you can avoid social media burnout:

First, do a “Joy Audit” on your current social media feeds.

Take twenty minutes right now to scroll through the social media feeds you spend the most time in and unfollow any account that doesn’t immediate spark a sense of JOY in you.

To take it a step further, schedule a 20-minute block to do a Joy Audit every month for the next few months so you can be sure you’re intentionally creating a joyful space for yourself whenever you do log in to social media.

Second, embrace the fact that to GET engagement on your social media posts, you must GIVE engagement first.

Chris Emmer of Sweaty Wisdom has termed this “Social Karma” and there’s no better name for it.

Social Karma.
What you throw out into the world is going to come right back your way.
What you put into Instagram, you’ll get out.
What you put into Facebook, you’ll get out.
What you put into your email list, you’ll get out.

So if you want if you want greater engagement – follows, likes, comments, AND QUALIFIED LEADS – you must first go GIVE that engagement to others.

For instance, Instagram.
Comments are GOLD on Instagram. We know they boost our relevancy within the IG algorithm. So typically, the more comments we get on our posts, the faster our account grows. Want comments? Go spend time commenting on others’ posts.

And Instagram Stories.
When other users click to your profile, DM you, or answer a poll from your Instagram Story, Instagram boosts your relevancy and shows your story to more people. Want people DM’ing you and answering your polls? Go watch others’ stories and begin conversations there.

How about Facebook Groups?
You want people to be more engaged in your Facebook Group? Go be engaged in others’ Facebook Groups.

Again, it’s all about shifting your perspective on social media so it no longer leads to burnout.

Intentionally create a joyful social media experience by completing a Joy Audit and then consciously embrace the concept of Social Karma by living it out. By giving first, receiving second.

Now, the task is simple. I give you permission to go spend twenty minutes on Instagram - the first ten doing a Joy Audit and the second ten engaging with others’ posts.

The Beauty of Outsourcing to Uplevel Your Business

 If you're ready to take your business to the next level, outsourcing can free up your time to work on only the most important tasks. 

Imagine sitting down at your desk, opening your laptop to discover a short to-do list.  You’re able to focus on serving your clients throughout the day, enjoying your meetings with happy clients who are pleased with your latest work.  After the last client meeting of the day, you answer a few emails, review the progress of your latest project and then close your laptop before dinner.  You feel pleased and grateful that the most important work of the day is done and your clients are beyond happy.

Does your typical workday look and feel this way?

Or does it play out something like this?

You sit down at your desk, open your laptop and take a deep breath to brace yourself for the day.  Your to-do list includes client work, writing the blog post that you planned to publish yesterday, interacting and posting on social media, and those updates to your website you’ve been pushing to the back burner for the past 2 months.

There is only so much that we can do alone as entrepreneurs.

And if you’re ready to uplevel your business to experience freedom, joy, and shorter work days that are actually productive, you’re going to have to unload some of the tasks on your plate.

So why should you outsource?

So you can focus on revenue-generating activities.

In order to uplevel your business, you have to spend your precious time on the tasks that will actually move your business forward.  

Known as revenue-generating activities, these tasks allow your business to grow exponentially:

  • extending invitations for discovery calls and connection calls
  • writing or refining sales copy
  • writing email nurture sequences and sales funnels
  • conducting market research
  • following up with warm leads
  • creating lead magnets
  • beta testing new offers and programs

Revenue generating activities are so valuable that they should be in your top 3 priorities for the day.  


If you got nothing else done for the day except revenue generating activities, you would have allocated your time and energy to the tasks that carry the most weight in your business.

You have space and freedom to enjoy your lifestyle

 In order to uplevel your business, you have to spend your precious time on the tasks that will actually move your business forward. Learn the importance of, and how to get started with, outsourcing. 

Naturally, when you focus on revenue-generating activities and client work, a 10 or 12 hour workday can become a 4 or 5 hour workday, giving you the time and freedom to actually live your dream work day.  

It’s completely possible to fully unplug during the weekend, close your laptop before dinner, and feel confident that your business is running smoothly.  

Outsourcing to a trusted, assistant or team is essential to your freedom because as your business grows, the workload is only going to increase.

You get to operate in your zone of genius

Chances are you are so passionate about the work you do that you decided to make a business out of it.  When you started, you probably weren’t thinking about all the other tasks included in business like the bookkeeping, marketing, emails, branding, etc.  

You were super excited about doing what you love.  

Naturally, you have to define what success means to you, but shouldn’t you be able to experience days where you get to focus on what you love?  

The beauty of outsourcing the tasks that don’t light you up is that you get to focus more closely on what does.

We don’t have to be the best at everything to be successful entrepreneurs.

For example, as a digital marketing strategist, it doesn’t take long for me to create a social media strategy for my clients because I’m naturally good at it.

For me, there’s nothing better than reverse engineering my client’s business goals and identifying the daily, weekly, and monthly action steps that need to take place on social media to meet those goals.

My clients profit tremendously from my expertise, because they don’t have to waste time researching the latest social media strategies and software, nor do they have to worry about reverse engineering their goals to create a successful marketing plan.

Getting prepared to outsource

So you may be thinking, ok outsourcing to create my dream day in business sounds great, but I don’t even know how to get started.

Outsourcing doesn’t have to be complicated.  

Write down the tasks that you love to do and make a list of the tasks that you’re not so crazy about.  Also take note of the projects or tasks that you keep falling behind on.

Spend some time making sure that you’ve documented the steps involved in completing those tasks so that your new team member can easily follow your workflow.

Now, take that list of tasks and create a description of the support you need in your business.  Then, share that description in a Facebook group where VAs or entrepreneurs hang out and you’ll begin to attract people who are more than happy to support you.  

Alternatively, you could share that description with people in your network who you trust to deliver a qualified referral.

So many entrepreneurs take pride in trying to do everything themselves, but the truth is that burnout is almost inevitable if you’re trying to run the show alone.  

The most successful, organized, and productive entrepreneurs understand the beauty of outsourcing and building a reliable team.

Your dream lifestyle and business are not going to manifest by accident.  It starts by intentionally creating space and freedom to do what you love by outsourcing.

5 Strategies for Working On Your Business, Not Just In Your Business

 5 strategies for working ON your business, not just IN your business. Prepare your business with systems, processes, management and vision-casting so your business doesn't run out of income when your current clients dry up. 

I am in a pretty unique position in getting to see the insides of other people’s business before they are making money and after, since I have clients at both stages. Here’s something interesting I notice – when people are working to get that business going, they spend a lot of time working ON their business. Envisioning the future, creating programs, trying new things in their marketing – and trying new things in general.

Once people hit some success, I see many who get so focused on their client work that they literally don’t have time left over to work on their own businesses. They spent all their time working IN, none working ON.

I think this can come from a lot of causes: a mindset of not truly believing that they will have a full client load one day, a lack of setting up the business model with limits on time, poor time management, poor pricing so that you have to overcommit to make your income goal, and probably more.

The one thing that is always true is that it proves toxic and sometimes deadly for solopreneurs!

If you’ve spent a period of time only working in your business on client work and never on your business streamlining, scaling, and setting up systems, when those clients go away, you’ll be left with nothing. No income, no waiting list, no pipeline of leads. You’ll have to start over again completely from scratch.

Terrifying, right?

Here are a few strategies that will help you prevent this from happening to you…or recover after making this mistake!

Hire before you feel ready

 Don't get stuck working IN your business, caught up with busywork and client projects, rather than setting yourself up for long-term success.

One of the messages I hear from every single internet millionaire is that they waited too long to bring someone onto their team. Growing a team, even hiring a virtual assistant for a couple hours a week at first, can free up your time to focus entirely on the income-producing activities while they do some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Tip: don’t just focus on the additional cost, think about the potential revenue increase you will see when you’ve freed up more time for your zone of genius.

Treat your business like another client on your roster

If you’re not yet at the stage of building a team, at the very least, add your own business to your list of clients. Seeing your business on the list will be a good reminder of where to focus your attention and to not let it slip by unnoticed.

Tip: flip this around and evaluate your performance as if you'd hired you to grow your own business. Would you be happy with what you have done?

Raise your rates

 When we get so many clients that we don’t have time for our own businesses, it can be a sign that our rates are too low. If you haven’t re-evaluated and raised your rates in awhile, it’s time.

Tip: there is no right or wrong way to raise rates when you currently have clients. You can keep your existing clients at their current rate, or let them know rates will be going up on a certain date. 

Own that CEO title

Do you have a lot of experience being an employee and very little as a CEO? Are you hesitant to own the fact that you are a CEO or an entrepreneur? Our self doubt in this area can be manifested in not showing up as the CEO in our business. Someone has to do it, and spoiler alert – no one else is going to show up to run your business. It has to be you.

Tip: sit down and write a job description and expectations you have for yourself as a CEO (from the employee perspective) and as an employee (from the CEO perspective). 

Schedule time for it

Let’s face it: things don’t happen unless we schedule them in. Schedule in specific time to work ON your business and really step into your role as the CEO. This can be one day a week, one hour a day, or something else.

Tip: treat this appointment in your calendar like any other. When we have appointments and commitments with ourselves, they seem optional or flexible. Treat your appointments with yourself like you would treat a doctor’s appointment — non-negotiable.

Mid-Year Review: 5 Steps to Get Back on Track With Your Goals

 How to get back on track with your goals when it's mid-way through the year. Review your past goals and set new ones. 

With half of the year already behind us, there’s no time like the present to conduct a mid-year review. After all, it’s important to reflect on what you’ve been able to accomplish and which tasks still lie ahead. This way, you’ll be able to create a plan of attack for the remainder of the year.

Whether you’ve been slacking on your goals or making great progress… Or maybe you’ve forgotten about your goals altogether? I’m going to share some tips to help you get back on track with your goals and make sure this year is a major success!

1. Review the Goals You Set at the Beginning of the Year

Hopefully, you took the time to write down your goals at the beginning of the year. Whether they’re scribbled in your notebook, saved in Evernote, or published on your blog, find them now. Start reviewing your list and ask yourself which ones you can happily tick off.

While you’re at it, make a note of the ones you’ve made some progress on, but haven’t completed yet, as well as the ones you haven’t even started. These are the goals we really want to focus on because they’re the ones that still need to be checked off your to-do list. If you want to, that is!

Before you can move forward, you need to decide if those goals are still what you want to accomplish. Do this by asking yourself one key question…

Are those goals still aligned with the big picture I envisioned for 2018?

If not, you shouldn’t be afraid to let them go. Sometimes our priorities shift, which is totally okay. And other times, these amazing ideas come to us out of nowhere and we want to pursue them instead. We have to be able to realize when something is no longer the right move for us and direct our attention elsewhere.

Being able to go with the flow and pursue the opportunities you’re most interested in is just one of the best parts about running your own business. It’s all about doing what feels good to you and what will leave you feeling fulfilled.

If you find that you still want to accomplish those goals you originally set for yourself, that’s great. You can move onto the next step!

But what if you’ve made the decision to scrap all of those goals your originally set for yourself? Well, you need to set some new ones! Think about what you’d actually like to make happen this year. What excites you? What kind of work do you want to be doing? Those should be your new goals, no matter how crazy they may feel right now.

2. Make Your Goals Actionable

Now that you have a list of amazing goals to accomplish before the year’s end, it’s time to actually make it happen. The first step in doing that is to make them more actionable. And you can do that by breaking down those big picture goals into smaller, actionable steps. This makes them feel more achievable and less overwhelming.

For instance, if your goal is to reach 200,000 monthly page views on your blog, set smaller milestones leading up to you hitting that goal at the end of the year. It’s less daunting this way and allows you to see when you’re actually making progress and when you’re slacking off. Then, you can make tweaks along the way if you aren’t hitting those milestones on time.

Take a moment to look at your goals and write down all of the smaller steps you have to take in order to get where you want to be. Doesn’t it feel much more manageable when you look at those big goals like this? Absolutely!

3. Set a Deadline & Schedule It

 Are your goals still aligned with the big picture you envisioned for the year? Evaluate your past and current goals to be sure you're still working towards.

Next, you have to give yourself a deadline for your goals. If you don’t have a deadline in place, you’ll continue procrastinating and before you know it, the end of the year will be here. And you won’t have made any progress.

Give yourself a realistic deadline that’s not going to leave you scrambling or stressed out to get it done. You need to allow yourself ample time to do the work that’s necessary of you.

From there, it’s just a matter of making it happen. And you do that by putting it into your schedule and dedicating the time to it. So, take a look at your refreshed list of goals and determine what you’d like to work on and when. You have the remainder of the year ahead of you, which gives you plenty of time to accomplish some big things. Set those deadlines and start blocking off the time in your calendar. This way, you’ll know exactly what you should be focusing on at any given time.

4. Find an Accountability Partner to Keep Yourself on Track

Because we want to make sure you’re staying on track with your goals, you have to find a way to keep making progress. What’s going to help push you along your journey? Perhaps having an accountability partner will make a difference!

Wouldn’t you love to have someone who you can discuss your goals with and check-in with? Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who can motivate you along your journey? Of course! Find yourself someone who can play that role for you and make sure you return the favor for them.

5. Don’t Beat Yourself Up

If reflecting on the first half of the year has you feeling a little down because you didn’t accomplish as much as you had hoped for, you have to let those feelings go. We don’t always hit every deadline we give ourselves. And we won’t always achieve the success we imagined we would. Sometimes things just don’t go to plan and we have to accept that, not tear ourselves apart.

Whenever you slip up, remember to just pick up the pieces and get back to work. The most important thing when it comes to your business is that you never give up.

From Writers Block to Idea Overload: Stop Wasting Time on These Six Content Setbacks
 Writers block? Idea overload? What content setbacks are keeping you from creating blogs, video, social media posts and email newsletters? Learn how to determine your marketing setbacks so you can write or film more efficiently and faster! 

You know you should be creating content as a small business owner — blog posts, videos, email newsletters, social media posts — but phew, it can be overwhelming to keep up with! Creating all that content could easily take up half of your work week, leaving you little time to be productive with your client priorities and building your business.

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but it used to take me 8 hours to write a blog post… and I tried to blog at least once a week. That’s ONE-FIFTH of my work week, people! (Ok, more like 1/8th… I was working WAY more than 40 hours a week back then).  I blamed my slow writing skills on perfectionism and figured there was nothing I could do to change that. It’s just who I am… I can’t get myself to put out half-baked work.

When I dug a little deeper, I discovered my actual blogging bottleneck stemmed from writing without a plan or an outline. I was slow because I didn’t know what to write and would restart my blog over and over again. I’d wait until the end to decide on a title for my post, which meant I didn’t have a clear direction as I wrote. Now that I’ve learned to start with a “promise” in my headline and then outline how I’ll deliver on that promise, I can write a blog post in under an hour!

Want to produce higher quality content in a shorter amount of time? Ready to actually enjoy writing or creating videos?

It’s time to break down your content setbacks… and they might not be what you think they are!

You may think you dread recording videos because you don’t like how you look on camera, when in reality, you may just need higher quality lighting and video equipment.

You may think your writer’s block stems from not knowing what to say, but perhaps you really suffer from imposter syndrome and fear coming across as a fraud.

The trick to discovering your true content setbacks is to dig one step deeper than what’s on the surface.

My 3-year-old nephew is the king of asking, why… why… why? Ask yourself, “What’s holding me back or slowing me down with my content creation.” Then ask, “why” and “why” again! Sounds so simple, but it’ll help you get to the root of your content woes so you can work faster, more efficiently, and enjoy it along the way.

Here are some of the biggest setbacks I see with content creation, and some solutions you can try.

1. Perfectionism

You won’t post anything live until it’s perfect… every Instagram image needs to flow, every blog post needs to be impactful, every video needs an awesome intro and outro animation. Tweaking things until they meet your high standards can be a huge waste of time. While I’m not encouraging you to post sloppy work or veer off-brand just for the sake of posting, you need to stop wasting time trying to be perfect. Here are some suggestions:

  • Set a timer for yourself so you don’t spend hours creating and tweaking
  • Hire a professional to handle the things you’re not as good at or that take you too long
  • Remember that done is better than perfect, and your audience might not even notice the little changes you’re looking to implement


2. Imposter syndrome

While you’re supposed to be the “expert,” you instead feel like a fraud and it keeps you from creating content. Either you spend far too much time researching, to make sure you don’t sound like a fool, or you freeze up on what to say at all. You fear the judgement, which keeps you from posting what you’d like to put out.

  • Remember that there are always people who know less than you, have less experience than you or do things different than you
  • Your followers follow you for a reason… because you’re at least one step ahead of them
  • What may come easy to you and seem like basic knowledge may be foreign to your audience
  • The more you post content and put yourself out there, the more confidence you’ll get
  • Never stop learning and growing, but set a limit for yourself so you don’t spend more time researching than taking action


3. You don’t know what to say

Writer’s block… Lack of inspiration… there are lots of reasons why you may not know what to say or post. Perhaps you feel you’ve already talked about everything there is to know about your topic. Or maybe your current content hasn’t been reaching people so you aren’t sure what changes you need to make. Then there are those who aren’t sure how to use your content to drive sales without sounding like a used car salesman.

  • Survey your audience to get to know their needs, questions and desires
  • Do a brain dump of everything you could talk about on your topic
  • Write down what you DO know and what makes your offer/brand unique
  • Brainstorm personal stories and experiences that you could share with your audience

4. You have too much to say

Do you suffer from idea overload for your blog, videos and social media posts? Perhaps you have a huge story bank, but just don’t know what will make the biggest impact and actually drive sales.

  • Survey your audience to see which of your content ideas align with your clients’ needs, questions and desires
  • Pick one offer to promote per month and choose topics that relate to that offer
  • Work backwards from your freebies, tripwires and main offers to choose topics that will support those

This tends to be one of the most common setbacks for my clients, so I did a Facebook Live about how to overcome idea overload! Watch here!


5. Fear of judgement

Similar to imposter syndrome, the fear of judgement is a mental battle that we often face. You might not like your writing style, brand “voice,” or actual voice on camera. Perhaps you’re afraid of friends and family viewing your content and not understanding your business.

  • Learn to ignore the trolls and negative sources in your life… haters gonna hate, so don’t let it get to you
  • Focus on your clients and the value you can provide
  • Start with one platform to build your confidence and slowly add others


6. Not enough time

So you feel like there’s just not enough time in the day to create the content you’d like to produce, right? Your to-do list is a mile long and you have other priorities besides just writing blogs, making videos and posting to social media.

  • Hire a professional to handle the things you’re not as good at or that take you too long
  • Batch create your content to save time
  • Set systems in place to help you work faster
  • Block out time on your calendar specifically for content creation

Creating blogs, videos and social media is a great way to connect with your audience, gain their trust and draw traffic to your website. However, if you’re spending too much time on content creation, you’re missing out on critical business-building priorities. Learning to be more efficient with your content creation is critical!
